… and the average life expectancy in the United States was 47 years. Only fourteen percent of the homes had a bathtub. Only eight percent of the homes had a telephone. Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn’t been invented. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. There were only 45 stars on the American flag; Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska hadn’t yet been admitted to the Union. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30. There was no Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Only six percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter. There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire United States. 1904 also marked the birth of the Delta Branch Experiment Station, and this is its story.
