After World War II, Superintendent Charles R. Sayre arrived at the Delta with plans for a significant addition in the form of the very first state-owned “glasshouse”. This structure was completed in 1946, allowing scientists to conduct research under controlled environmental conditions. The growing season could be extended past the first frost in the fall for the year.
